Mike has been working in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 30 years. He was initially trained by Ben Yang in the 1980s before completing his formal qualification, a Bachelor of Health Science in Acupuncture, once training programmes became available in New Zealand. For many of those years, he has taught at the New Zealand School of Acupuncture in Auckland. He has also been a member of the New Zealand Register of Acupuncture since 1992. One of the highlights of his career was a visit to Dongzhimen Hospital in Beijing in 2007, where he observed and experienced acupuncture, tuina (Chinese massage), and Chinese herbal medicine being practised in a hospital setting. His other professional interests include tuina and qi gong (breathing exercises).
Mike has a particular interest in respiratory conditions, especially chronic asthma, bronchitis, and allergies. One of his client success stories involves a woman in her early 30s who presented with ongoing breathlessness and wheezing following an acute viral respiratory condition. This left her fearful of sleeping at night, chronically tired during the day, and unable to undertake light exercise or return to work. After a series of 6–8 acupuncture treatments, combined with some dietary changes, she experienced a marked improvement. Her overall energy levels increased significantly, she was able to walk around the block again (one of her favourite past times), and her mental health improved, with depression and fear of sleeping no longer being an issue.
Outside of work, Mike enjoys cycling and swimming, which he regularly practises on Waiheke Island.
